item arrived in perfect condition. after a good cleaning, I ground salt and brown rice to condition the surface. Then after a hot water rinse, I placed in the oven at about 200 Degrees until dry .Mortar measured 8" outside and 6 1/2 inside. The interior finish was perfect for final grinding wheat berries.Although its slow, you can grind or pound until desired fineness.note however, I preground the wheat berries in my model 90 champion grinder first. can't wait to try salsa and dips.
Very heavy duty . does not move around when using. Looks great on table
real rustic. I guess you could use it in the oven at higher baking temps. It granite. you cant hurt it. very resistant to acids unlike marble, and granite will take a decent pounding without breaking. granite is next to diamond for hardness . I also ordered the 8" tei granite mortar to compare.

This mortar and Pestle is super heavy duty and bigger than you'd expect. (though reading the product description helps) It is not glossy or cheap feeling. The Pestle would work for home defense as well. :-)

I bought this for my wife for her birthday, and she loves it! It's actually a lot bigger than I expected and that sucker is heavy, but it's perfect for mashing up large quantities and the weight keeps it firmly on the counter. It looks wonderful as well!
